about

The title of this album comes from the Twelve Bens (lit. The Peaks of Beola) which preside over Connemara where I grew up and learnt my music.

Sometimes it takes some time and distance before one can appreciate how much influence a place can have on oneself and when I finally plucked up the courage to put together a second solo album, it was obvious to me straight away that, for it to come into fruition, I would simply have to sit and think about Connemara in musical terms in order get my inspiration.

Each track for me somehow relates to a certain time or place, whether at ceilís, set-dancing classes, singing sessions, music sessions, boat launches, feast days, house visits, feises or fleadhs

This album is not an attempt to trace the origin of certain tunes to Connemara, as I think music has always and will always travel and musicians are always on the lookout for new, fresh repertoire. This is simply a sample of some of the music I was lucky to have learnt through the years from very special people, through meetings, conversations and gatherings at my homeplace in Connemara.

The entirety of this album sleeve wouldn’t provide enough space on which to thank everybody who has been a part of my musical journey to date, and the tracks on the album come from just a selection of these special people. I hope my music captures some of the essence of the rich and beautiful place that Connemara is.
